A Japan tourist visa from India officially takes a minimum of 5 working days after VFS accepts your application. In practice, most applicants get a decision in 5–10 working days.
That number only covers the embassy’s part. Add appointment booking, document prep and passport return, and the realistic end-to-end time is 2–4 weeks. This guide breaks down each stage, what slows things down, and when you should apply.
What the official “5 working days” means
Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs sets the standard at five working days, counted from the day after the application is received. Peak seasons and high volumes can push it longer (Business Standard).
The Japanese missions in India say the same thing, with caveats:
- Chennai consulate: generally 5 working days once VFS Chennai accepts the file; applications filed at VFS centres in other cities may take longer (Consulate-General of Japan, Chennai).
- Mumbai consulate: warns that rising application volumes mean processing times can vary significantly (Consulate-General of Japan, Mumbai).
Treat 5 working days as a floor, not a promise. Weekends and Indian and Japanese public holidays don’t count.
The real end-to-end timeline
The embassy’s clock is only one stage. Here’s how the whole process typically adds up (Visa2Fly):
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Gathering documents (bank statements, ITRs, itinerary, photos) | 1–5 days |
| Getting a VFS appointment | 2–14 days |
| Embassy/consulate processing | 5–10 working days |
| Passport return or collection | 1–3 days |
| Total, realistic | about 2–4 weeks |
Simple tourist files usually clear in 5–7 working days. Complex cases, such as business visas or files needing extra checks, can take 10–30+ days.
eVISA vs sticker visa: does it change the timing?
Not much. Since April 2024, Indian residents can receive a Japan eVISA for single-entry tourism of up to 90 days, if they arrive by air (BankBazaar). But you still apply through VFS and submit documents in person, and processing still runs about 5–7 working days.
- eVISA: you get a visa issuance notice by email and show it on your phone at immigration. Screenshots and printouts are not accepted.
- Sticker visa: pasted into your passport, which VFS returns to you. Needed for multiple-entry, business and most non-tourism visas.
Some websites claim Indians can now apply fully online with no VFS visit. The Japanese missions and VFS still say in-person submission is required, so check the VFS Japan India portal before relying on that.
Peak season and common delays
During busy travel periods, processing can stretch to 10–15 working days at crowded centres, especially Mumbai and Delhi. There is no paid express option, so the only fix is applying earlier (Matrix).
Peak periods to plan around:
- Cherry blossom season (late March–April)
- Indian summer holidays (May–June)
- Autumn foliage and Diwali (October–November)
- Year-end holidays (December)
Most other delays come from the file itself: missing or mismatched documents, weak bank statements, an unclear itinerary, or applying at the wrong VFS centre for your jurisdiction.
What changed in 2026
| Change | Effective | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Mumbai consulate moves all applications to VFS | 20 April 2026 | No more direct submission at the consulate (Mumbai consulate) |
| Appointments mandatory in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Puducherry | 2 March 2026 | No walk-ins; book on the VFS portal first, which can add days (Business Today) |
| Japan’s global visa fee revision | 1 July 2026 | Reportedly does not apply to Indian passport holders applying at VFS in India; the fee stays around ₹500 plus VFS charges (Visa2Fly) |
Fees and appointment rules can change, so confirm on the VFS portal before you pay.
When should you apply?
Apply 4–6 weeks before your flight, and 6–8 weeks for peak season. That covers appointment waits, processing and a buffer for queries.
Tips to keep it on the 5-day track:
- Apply at the VFS centre that covers the state on your address proof. Wrong jurisdiction means rejection or delay.
- Book your VFS appointment as soon as your itinerary is fixed.
- Match every detail: names, dates and hotels must be the same across the form, itinerary and bookings.
- Show solid finances: recent bank statements and ITRs that comfortably cover the trip.
- Track your application on the VFS website instead of calling the embassy.
- Don’t book non-refundable flights or hotels until the visa is issued.
Plan for 2–4 weeks end to end, and you’ll rarely be caught out.
