Türkiye e-Visa for Indian Business Travellers: The Supporting-Visa Rule

Last reviewed For HR teams, travel desks, delegation leaders

An Indian passport holder cannot simply buy a Türkiye e-Visa online: the Turkish Embassy in New Delhi says the e-Visa is open to Indian nationals only if they hold a valid visa or residence permit from the Schengen area, the USA, the UK or Ireland. A team where only some staff hold such a document will need two routes.

Who can use the e-Visa, according to the Embassy

The Embassy’s announcement (dated 1 March 2024) states that Indian nationals can obtain an e-Visa provided that they hold a supporting document: a valid visa or a valid residence permit from one of the Schengen countries, the USA, the UK or Ireland. The document must be valid by date at the time of entry into Türkiye. Used or unused visas are accepted if their validity covers the entry date, and e-Visas of other countries are not accepted as supporting documents. A visa in an old passport is accepted, but the e-Visa must be registered on the current passport and the old passport carried and shown at Turkish immigration.

The announcement adds that the e-Visa is only valid when the purpose of travel is tourism or commerce; work and study visas are issued by Turkish Embassies or Consulates. Travellers without a qualifying supporting document apply for a sticker visa at a Turkish mission. The notice says an e-Visa costs at least 85 USD less than a sticker visa but gives no e-Visa fee for Indian nationals.

Check the date

The announcement we reviewed is dated March 2024. The Embassy refers applicants to evisa.gov.tr for the current rules, so confirm the supporting-document list and the fee there before you book.

Splitting a team across routes

  • Holds a qualifying document: e-Visa route, applied for online, with the supporting visa or permit valid on the entry date.
  • Holds no qualifying document: sticker visa from a Turkish mission, which needs more lead time.
  • Planning work rather than commerce: not covered by the e-Visa according to the notice; the work visa comes from a Turkish mission.

How BTW helps with a Türkiye trip

  1. Audit each passport.

We check which travellers hold a Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or permit and when it expires relative to the trip.

  2. Match the purpose.

We confirm that the activity falls under tourism or commerce and not work or study.

  3. Run both routes in parallel.

E-Visa files for qualifying travellers and sticker-visa appointments for the rest, tracked together.

  4. Handle the passport detail.

Where the supporting visa sits in an older passport, we make sure both passports travel and the e-Visa is registered on the current one.
