From 26 October 2026, people applying for an Australian visa in India may be required to give biometrics, meaning fingerprints and a facial image, as part of the application. Australia is extending biometric collection to nearly 60 countries, including India, as part of keeping its visa system secure, efficient and trusted.
What applicants need to know
- You will be told if it applies to you. The Department of Home Affairs advises each applicant whether they must give biometrics, and sends instructions on how to do it.
- Two ways to give biometrics. Depending on your circumstances, you may be asked to attend an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC) in person, or to provide your biometrics digitally through the Australian Immi App.
- Free option for some applicants. If you have already given your biometrics at an ABCC and hold a valid passport, you may be able to use the Australian Immi App to give them again at no cost.
- Only new applications. The requirements apply to visa applications lodged from 26 October 2026. Applications already submitted are not affected.
- Processing times. Visa processing times are not expected to change, provided applicants complete any biometric requirement promptly.
- Privacy. Biometric information is collected, stored and managed in line with Australian legislation and applicable local laws, with privacy and data protection safeguards in place.
